Brooke Blurton and Matty Mills’ First Things First Crowned Podcast Champion

Nova Podcasts’ First Things First, hosted by Brooke Blurton and Matty Mills, has been crowned Podcast Champion at the 2024 Australian Podcast Awards. This prestigious award recognises the podcast’s outstanding ability to amplify Indigenous and LGBTQIA+ voices while tackling significant social issues with warmth, energy, and authenticity.

First Things First has become a standout since its launch in 2022, with its ability to deliver vibrant and engaging conversations, covering everything from dating and politics to family and identity. First Things First addresses challenging topics like racism and grief, while still achieving an optimistic and relatable tone, leaving listeners both inspired and reassured.

Brooke Blurton said, “This win means so much because it shows how far podcasts like ours can go in bringing attention to the stories and voices that don’t often make the mainstream. We’re so proud to create a space that’s not only meaningful but entertaining and approachable too.”

Matty Mills added, “We wanted First Things First to be more than just a podcast; we wanted it to spark conversations, challenge perceptions, and celebrate the diversity of First Nations and Queer experiences. Winning Podcast Champion tells us that our listeners feel the impact, and that’s everything to us.”

The judges praised First Things First for its ability to elevate First Nations voices within a broader cultural context. Unlike many shows focusing on Indigenous perspectives with a sombre tone, the podcast is a reminder that these stories can be told with lightness and humour, while still addressing deeply important and sensitive topics. This dynamic approach ensures the podcast resonates widely, offering both education and entertainment.

Rachel Corbett, Head of Podcasts and Digital Content at NOVA Entertainment, expressed her pride in the team’s achievement. “Winning Podcast Champion is a well-deserved acknowledgment of the incredible work Brooke, Matty and their production team do in creating a safe, dynamic space for stories that matter. First Things First isn’t just a podcast, it’s a celebration of voices and perspectives that are too often overlooked in mainstream media. We’re so proud to see their work being recognised in this way.”

First Things First is an original Nova Podcast, with new episodes dropping weekly. The podcast is available via the Nova Player or wherever you get your podcasts.
